These are songs made with confidence and a devotion to furthering and exploring one’s own style, and nowhere is that more the case than on “GOTY”. Tracks on here sound new, almost alien at times, but they also manage to sound exactly like what I might have imagined Saturn’s sound evolve into were anyone to ask me that question a year or two ago. In other words, Saturn is creating and defining his own lane in this vast, busy music scene, and New California is a breathtaking first taste. 

Videogames have gotten me through a lot of the feelings I couldn’t put words to when I was younger. I have core memories from playing everything from COD BO2, to Terraria, nearly every Lego videogame, and countless others in more recent years. Videogames influence the writing across most of New California, but my favorite moments occur on “GOTY”. I especially loved these lines referencing COD and then Terraria, 

respawn campin till i get inside your head

and take that

take that

take that

dog tag round your belt and show it off

solo run through hell wall of flesh show it off 

As an aside I also want to note how the energy of “GOTY” in particular immediately brought to mind this Zephrxd track from a couple years ago titled “Tutorial Level 4 NOOBS”. At first I chalked it up to the videogame parallel because the two songs are instrumentally very different, but after listening to both a couple times, I genuinely believe there’s a similar level of drive and intention while creating between these two artists. Both of these are amazing songs, and both are under two minutes so really the best thing you could do after reading this is look up both songs and give them a shot.
