In this exclusive Music Mondays article we dive into a recent release from blxty and why you should be paying attention to this underground artist.

Since the start of this decade, two artists have impacted me in a more meaningful way than the rest, by a large margin. One could make a fair assumption that mental and blxty have been making songs together since they first decided to release music, a true duo. When I first discovered them, I believe they’d had each other's name in their bio’s on social media, and for a short time I genuinely believed they were two aliases of the same person. Mental and blxty’s ‘light music club’ collaborative album came out in late March 2023.
I happened to be visiting my family in Texas at this time, when a family member passed and my trip took a turn as we went to Arizona for the funeral. Two projects alone came out at the most divine moment and got me through this period, ‘No Thank You’ by Little Simz, and ‘light music club’. It took the better part of these past three years but since spring 2023, I have moved into my first apartment with my girlfriend, and have been maintaining a life with more stability and routine. The pattern of my favorite artists dropping their art at the absolute perfect time in my life continued when blxty released ‘bb’, their latest 16 track solo album.
There are features from Lucy Bedroque, mental, and h3artch3rades, and production credits from venexxi, cutspace, sochi, and more on this project, and I could pick quotable lines or marvel at the instrumentals from every song on here, but there is one song in particular that encapsulates an atmosphere only a mental x blxty track could. “Missed the point”, is track 5 on ‘bb’, it is also the most substantive song lyrically. The refrain is my favorite section of the song, it reads...
“It’s you why would I love if it’s not you
Put my brain in memory lane and I go insane cause it’s all you
I wanna feel the way you do, I wanna see the way you do
I wouldn’t feel the way I feel if you were me and I were you”
Mental picks up verse two after the refrain, and I really love the first three lines that read like one of smeagol’s creepy riddles for bilbo in the book The Hobbit.
“What’s sour but better off sweet?
It can grab onto your heart and make you forget how to speak
Felt it once upon a time, I still remember everything”
As a quick aside, I think Mental might currently be the best writer in the entire scene, in 2023 they appeared as a feature on A Hype’s song “Inspiration To The World”
and the line...
“saks fifth neiman marcus what’d i get this time
new balenci pants they way too big but if i trip ill fly"
I still think about that periodically.
When these two artists get on a song and start talking about love, it feels like some arcane magic is actually being used. ‘bb’ is just not something to miss, blxty’s hard work and dedication to art is sure to pay off, they have done incredible.
