Today, media and especially music, can be highly diluted and trend towards oversaturation throughout the various major subgenres. It can be hard to find a truly unique voice among the chaos.

With Support’s The Beach, her bombastic debut album leaves no doubt as to its individuality. Support, an incredibly talented rapper and producer out of Washington state, is a name more casual listeners should familiarize themselves with. The Beach is a massive 19 tracks spanning an hour and a half in length. With features from artists like Jay Cinema, Dot-Com Intelligence, Departure, and JUNE!, and co-production contributed by producers Tresgenio and Brimbeatz, this 19-track album feels like a modern epic from the start. Once you drop into the opening guitar riffs and Support’s temporarily filtered vocals, it immediately sets the tone for what is one of the most versatile, entertaining, and enigmatic projects of the decade so far. Join me in appreciating what will ultimately go down as a high mark in an extremely talented and hopeful era of underground hip-hop!
Production is one of the most important things in terms of setting the tone of a project. Not only can you shift the entire feel of a track simply based on the choices made within the track, but throughout a dense work of art, you can feel certain themes and inspirations begin to develop. As a producer, my mind will always gravitate to these ideas first, and this was my first moment where I realized the kind of project I was in for. Support’s production choices here are just as hectic and scattered as they are potent and wildly hypnotic, with tracks like Brain Bleedin or Epilogue: Ghost Story Chapter 1: Mary Celeste produced by Brimbeatz specifically rocketing to some of my highest played tracks of the year. Every time you find comfort within these minimalistic cuts, you are quickly challenged again with tracks like Bedlam, Misery, and Bad Reputation // Amethyst II, which break through that haze to smack you in the face with constantly shifting beats and unwavering flows. Support is incredible at weaving through everything thrown her way, consistently showing an understanding of composition that benefits both her rapping and the beats she decides to use. The murky melancholy that inhabits tracks like Bananas featuring Dot-Com Intelligence, the aforementioned Brain Bleedin, or Parfum with Departure is undeniably my favorite part of the project. Some of the brighter moments, like I Love You to Heaven or the title track featuring Jay Cinema, stand on their own as some of the best work of Support’s catalog so far. Support produced 17 (!!) of the 19 tracks on The Beach, and that alone should be recognized for the incredible achievement that it is. An artist this intentional and interesting can manifest that in multiple ways, and while the production is ultimately incredible, it's he is r work on the mic that left me truly floored. After I heard about this project for the first time and got the chance to speak to her while working on tracks for a project of mine, I was struck by her intention and level of detail in every line. She utilizes these skills to incredible effect in the writing and rapping of this project. Reminding me of Serengeti in all of his eccentricities as an artist, she takes the typical conventions of a track simply as suggestions to serve a greater purpose. Whether it's rapping for almost 9 minutes on I Love You to Heaven or going toe to toe with one of the underground’s best with Jay Cinema, she is consistently giving the listener reasons to believe in her. Rapping with a level of intensity that demands to be heard, every verse on this project is backed by experience and pain. The hurt in her voice on tracks like Parfum or the awe-inspiring confidence on Family Guy feel authentic in a way that’s easy to understand and even easier to feel. Each verse is packed with deep cut references, punchlines, stories, and experiences that immerse you to the point the genius of what she’s saying is flying over your head. This project is Support announcing her arrival on the scene. If this is any indication of what is to come, there is a lot to be excited about.
