It’s easy to have cautious optimism around seeing a favorite artist of mine release an original song for a Netflix film in 2025, but Little Simz is an artist whose- well whose artistry I trust, so as such I went into my first listen of her new single “Don’t Leave Too Soon”, from Steve, an upcoming Netflix film, as I would any other single from her. Naturally, she followed through.
9/19/25
The track begins with a list:
“Out of sight
Out of mind
Out of time
Out of love
Out of breath
Out of body
Out of friends”
The cadence here is kept for the verses, causing the song to blend and feel quite fluid, almost as if there were no chorus, and producing an unconventional listening experience. After the first verse, and a short, angelic refrain reading:
“Hold on
Don’t leave too soon
Your pain
I feel it too”
the lyrics are swapped and become
“Out of line
Out of fight
Out of Shrooms
Out of wine
All these feelings in your pockets
weighing you down
Through this tunnel
I hope you make it out alive
In this concrete jungle
Patience isn’t kind”
In this moment, the song opens up into a beautiful breakbeat that feels perfectly apt for this already rather different song structure. On first listen, this moment in the song brought the opening lines of the track back to mind, the lines read:
“I can tell that you don’t get out as much
With these rocks on your back
Weighing you down
‘Cause you feel that all of you is not enough
You’re out of touch
And out of sight
Out of mind"
