The Zway Interview: Part 2

The second part in our two-part interivew series with Zway, we got the chance to discuss everything from the future and plenty more in this Music Mondays Exclusive Interview.

1/9/25

Don't be deceived. The rise of Zway is upon us. I believe that this young man's sound is on the cusp of something beautiful, hard to miss even. I hope that these accounts shed light on someone that deserves it. No one should miss out on something so special, so let's dig deeper into the magic.

What accomplishments do you see yourself achieving in the next five to 10 years?

"Oh man, this is a hard one because I rarely think about the future. I haven't had long term goals in a while. My main thing is making sure that I am continuing to advance my career in machining and production; either through the company/a similar one to where I work now, or for the coffin clvb. I don't want to give away too much info yet, but just know that coffin clvb will be a pot smoker's friend in the near future with even more to come later. Also, outside of things for the company to sell, I am creating prototypes for things like camera dollies and light mounts. I want to be able to create almost anything we may need to create art, completely in house. As for my music, I'm not sure. I have been in a rut for about 6 months where I have created nothing. But that'll change soon."

What strengths do you have that you believe make you a great musician?

"I think my biggest strength has to be how much I scrutinize myself and how easily I will throw something out even if it took me months to create it. My best music has come after creating multiple songs that I just did not like, scrapping the bad and moving the good to a completely different song and then made something out of it that I liked. If you just release everything, no quality control, you end up being forgettable. And I never want to be forgotten. Some people say I'm too hard on myself and getting rid of things that should be shown to the world, but that's wrong to me. At the end of the day I never started making music because I wanted others to hear it, I did it to release my emotions and feelings. I go through periods where I create dozens of songs and then never show anyone because I just don't feel like releasing it, only ever doing so because I randomly get the feeling to. This is why I am so inconsistent, I just don't make music to release it."

Do you have any weaknesses that you're actively working to improve on?

"You could argue that what I just talked about is a weakness of mine, but I wouldn't agree. In my personal life I try to be more open about how I feel with others instead of holding it in and only talking in my music. Related to that, I think the biggest weakness I have is my preference for isolation. I don't like talking if I can help it, feeling the presence of other people can make me uncomfortable, recognizing that I'm zoning out when people talk to me, etc. These are just small bits that make me want to be alone almost constantly, to the point where I can't experience much of life. How do you learn and grow from others if you're never around them? But that's when I feel my best, so what can I do? I will figure it out one day"

Who are the other members of COUGHINCLVB and how is the chemistry with them?

"So here's the problem with that question real fast; I'm not sure. Immediately it is Me, scvm45, and his wife. But then there's megazloth and headtooloud as well, both of which I haven't personally talked to in a while so I am not sure where they stand in the group really. I don't think I would be the one they'd reach out to though, so I truly do not know. Then also there's our local friends whom we consider unofficial members, but they are strictly musician friends and do not do anything to the business. Me and scvm are essentially best friends, and all of the unofficial members are people I love being around so the chemistry is there. We wouldn't want to be together as a company with bad chemistry, so you know what's up if we ever disband lol.

Do you think a full band Zway set is something your fans could look forward to? Even if far off?

Oh for sure, definitely in the cards. Two of my buddies wanted to create a band, but that fell through due to busy lives. It's something I would love to do especially since I have done a lot of metal work. I would LOVE to do some death metal work, maybe some metalcore, but at the moment there are no plans for this. Solo metal EP coming in 2025 though."

Tell us about your favorite performance in your career.

There are two that I can think of off the top of my head. My absolute best performance was also my very first performance at a bar. Usually we do house shows, so this was a different experience and I absolutely KILLED it. It was the best I've ever done, literally everything went right. I remembered every lyric, my tone was amazing for every song, I had the energy to actually move around and give the crowd energy, and talking to the crowd in between songs was so much fun. My second favorite was the show we did a few months back that my little brother was able to witness. My brother and parents visited for 3 days and one of those days was a show day, so my little brother was the doorman. But he also got to witness my entire set that night, and while it wasn't the best due to running out of breath a few times, I still did a great job and he had fun. It was one of the biggest shows we've done, so he got to witness that and he actually enjoyed it. Maybe that one is actually my favorite.

For all newcomers to live performances, what would you do if you made a mistake during a performance?

Oh man, almost no one will care about that. If you forget the lyrics, hit some mother fucking adlibs. Out of breath? Just skip a couple words, no one will notice. Voice crack? Man, have you watched any BMTH performances? Oliver cracks plenty, so you're allowed to. Just take a second to breathe and continue performing. One of the best qualities to have as a person, not just a musician, is being able to adapt and recover. So here's what you should do: Fuck up and fuck up often. You have to know how it feels so you're not freaking out on stage when it happens, and you need to know how to recover. Just remember, keep it pushing and nothing will be able to stop you.

Thank you Zway, and we will be watching. Keep being amazing at what you do.

"I will break your arms if you ever say anything nice about me again. Thanks for having me!"
