Prolific California producer klwn cat continues to impress with his output, both in terms of quality and consistency. Recently, I was granted the opportunity of a sneak-peek at an upcoming project of his, a collaboration with ************. I was duly, and unsurprisingly, impressed.

The first thing that stuck out to me, as is common with klwn cat’s work, is the instrumentation in the beats. there’s a sense of contrast with the sound and the vibe that can only be understood once you hear the music, I’ve personally never heard such happy-sounding music be so ominous and foreboding. This created a perfect atmosphere for the raps as [REDACTED] and the selected features cover myriad subject matter with sharp wit and impressive depth.
I’m familiar with all but one of the guest verses on the project (but that will change reasonably soon), and they all fit perfectly on their respective tracks, the chemistry with a certain stalwart of the underground was a big highlight on this front. As stated earlier, the project covers a lot of subjects, and in the times we find ourselves in, it’s no surprise that artists are finding themselves moved to creation by a number of things happening, from genocide, class struggle and personal experiences, there’s no real limit to what’s covered here, and ************ does it in their typical vague-yet-lucid manner of speech. The raps are breakneck at times, with a lot of self-referential lyrics that fans will appreciate and a good amount of memorable one-liners that are sure to make new ones. It feels like a project that was made by someone who sees just how crazy the world has been recently.
The instrumentals see klwn at his best, crafting catchy loops and his signature banging drums (where present). There’s a variety of styles here, from drumless bossa nova samples to vocal chops with cracking percussion, there’s ample pockets for [REDACTED] to fill, and fill they do. klwn seems to have mastered the art of making an instrumental just emphatic enough to be memorable and also give the vocalist the time to shine, every beat is unique and gets stuck in your head, and you feel like they were made specifically for the verses laid over them.
“Eventually, it all crumbles like a castle in the sand,” closes track 2, words that seem both pessimistic and optimistic in how they’re presented. But the snake is eating its tail, eventually it all rises again, like the castle rebuilt by a resolute child. Until then, this is a good soundtrack to the apocalypse.
