When you first press play on “Wavelength”, the debut solo effort from Toronto-based Secret Scriptures artist no god., you are set up for what looks like fairly common territory for a rapper’s debut: a triumphant beat, slick rhymes, lots of braggadocio and a showcase of what he has to offer on a rapping level.

After the opening track (“Motion”), though, you are immediately taken into a story about no god.’s struggles with managing his emotions in a society that constantly tells men to simply ignore them, told through his experiences playing basketball. The NODUO stalwart then proceeds to take the listener on a journey of highs (Banana Kush, Resonance) and lows (Drain, Submerged) with one main theme: figuring it out. The ten tracks of this project are littered with lyrical highlights, profound musings and things that many people will have always needed to say but lacked the words.
Relationships are a big part of what is discussed as well. No god. Navigates his experiences with people from his past and present, addressing where things went wrong, where things went right, and everything in between. There is a complex and multifaceted presentation of the way he sees thee relationships and their development, and a severe level of accountability is taken on his part, which is a breath of fresh air in a genre where artists tend to perpetually be the hero of every story.
My best description for this project would be if the catchphrase “I understand it now” was made into an album and “it” referred to “how to navigate life and interpersonal relationships as a sensitive young man”. It is an incredible musical self-portrait, and a rare but necessary reminder to male listeners that we should all be more unabashedly sensitive.
